Why I refused to stand up while others recited the new national anthem at an event – Activist Aisha Yesufu reveals

In a new video making the rounds on social media, activist Aisha Yesufu explained why she refused to stand while others recited the new national anthem at a recent event.

Aisha Yesufu has become a trending topic online following the video she shared on her X handle on May 31st, 2024, where she deliberately ignored the new anthem. While others stood in respect, Yesufu remained seated, flipping through a book and adjusting her glasses.

The controversy stems from President Tinubu’s decision on May 29th, 2024, to revert the national anthem to the old one. This change replaced “Arise, O Compatriots” with “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” originally written by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Berda.

In a recent interview, Yesufu emphasized that for her, there is only one national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots.” She stated that she would stand to recite this anthem, but if “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” is recited, she would remain seated, questioning the relevance of the change.

Yesufu further criticized the change as an obnoxious law, arguing that the national assemblies should focus on more pressing issues. She expressed her disappointment with the current administration under President Tinubu, highlighting the worsening situation in Nigeria, with companies leaving, a declining GDP, and a lack of security for lives and properties.

Her actions and statements have sparked mixed reactions, with some praising her boldness and others criticizing her for perceived disrespect.
