Portuguese winger Diogo Jota has reportedly died in a tragic car accident in Spain, according to local media sources. The incident occurred on the A52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in the Zamora region.
Jota, 28, was said to be travelling with his brother, André, when their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire. Both men reportedly lost their lives in the crash.
Jota, who played as a left winger for Liverpool after transferring from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for £41 million, had recently celebrated a major milestone in his personal life. Just ten days before the accident, he married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. The couple, who have three children together, shared heartfelt wedding photos on Instagram, including a caption that read: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”
The wedding post garnered over 190,000 likes and more than 1,000 comments, with expressions of support and love from fellow Liverpool forward Darwin Núñez and Natalia Becker, the wife of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.
As of now, neither Liverpool Football Club nor Portuguese authorities have issued official statements confirming the incident.
In a statement, the emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region said:
” The 112 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora.
“A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.”
They went on: “112 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.
“From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.”
