A viral video showing some Nigerians celebrating the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari has sparked widespread reactions online.
In the clip, several individuals were seen partying, dancing, and cheering, creating a stark contrast to the somber mood expected following the passing of a former national leader.
Buhari’s death was officially announced on Sunday, July 12th, 2025, by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, who posted the news on X (formerly Twitter). According to the statement, the 82-year-old former president died at a clinic in London. He served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 and had earlier ruled as military head of state between 1983 and 1985.
While some citizens expressed their condolences and prayed for his soul, others openly celebrated his passing. Critics argued that his years in power left deep wounds, citing hardship, insecurity, and economic struggles. The video of people jubilating has since drawn both support and backlash, reflecting the divided legacy Buhari leaves behind.
