A Nigerian man has reportedly fled with over ₦20 million after allegedly defrauding more than 1,000 residents in Auchi, Edo State, under the pretense of selling rice at discounted prices.

According to reports circulating on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the man had opened a shop where he sold over 100 bags of 50kg rice at just ₦20,000 per bag — far below the current market price.

The tempting offer drew large crowds, and the initial stock was said to have sold out within hours. Building on the trust he gained, the man then encouraged customers to pre-book bags from his next restock by paying in advance.

Over 1,000 people reportedly transferred ₦20,000 each to secure their orders. However, by the next morning, the man was nowhere to be found, sparking outrage and concern among victims and residents of the community.

The original post was shared by user @KunnujiC, who wrote:

“So one guy opened a shop in Auchi selling a bag of rice for N20k and after finishing the stock, he collected over 1000 people’s demand of 20k each order to bring them more bags of rice. This morning, as people woke up, bros don run.. 😂😂😂 This is not format but wickedness.”

The incident has since gone viral, sparking outrage and concern in the comment section, where many Nigerians expressed frustration over the growing trend of scams and financial desperation in the country.

See some reactions below:

@oluotanmilotus: “Omoo, this guy don cash out.”

@HassassinCreedd: “Bag of rice 20k keh, them deserve am because them dey craze.”

@SimonKris1: “Omo. U sure say I no go my village like this so?”

@IsangCeo: “20k 50kg bag of rice can only be stolen goods in today apc Nigeria 🇳🇬 and over 1000 people who gave him money to supply them were thieves themselves and they got robbed. Serves them right.”

@Collins_Paul_cp: ‘Lol. Had a similar ordeal over here. They printed flyers “food access” claiming they were an NGO and they sell foodstuffs for half the original price. Only catch was you pay today and get your goods 5 days later. 😅😅 They delivered the first week, gathered millions and poof.”

@Oye28: “No, the man is not wicked, that gullible and it shows that it not a politician/rich people syndrome it is the state of man’s desperation. 20k and fall into the trap. Nigerians don’t like the truth.”
