The United Kingdom has announced a major change to its immigration policy by removing over 100 mid-skilled jobs from the Skilled Worker visa list. This move is expected to hit Nigerian migrants and hopeful applicants the hardest.
UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described the policy as a “complete reset” aimed at reducing migration and focusing on building local skills.
Under the new rule, only jobs rated at RQF Level 6 and above now qualify for the Skilled Worker visa. This removes many roles in hospitality, construction, and skilled trades — areas where Nigerians previously found job opportunities.
In addition, the UK government has:
- Closed the social care worker visa route to new overseas applicants
- Introduced a Temporary Shortage List (TSL) and revised Immigration Salary List (ISL)
- Banned dependants from certain temporary visa categories
A full review has also been commissioned to assess the updated shortage lists.
Current Nigerian migrants in the UK may struggle to renew their visas unless they switch to higher-level roles that now meet the new criteria.
The UK government says the changes are needed to reduce reliance on foreign workers and strengthen its own workforce.
