Nigerian social media has been set ablaze following a tense incident at the Abuja Airport involving Fuji music legend K1 De Ultimate and a ValueJet flight crew, which has since led to the suspension of the airline’s pilots and stirred nationwide attention.
At the center of this storm is Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, the highly regarded female pilot now making headlines beyond aviation circles.
What Happened at Abuja Airport?
Onboard a ValueJet flight (VK 201) scheduled for Lagos, K1 De Ultimate was reportedly denied boarding after attempting to carry a liquid substance — said to be alcohol — against airline safety rules. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) issued a statement confirming that K1 was asked to step aside after allegedly refusing to comply. In the process, he was said to have spilled the alcohol on a staff member.
In a widely circulated video, the Fuji icon was seen walking alarmingly close to the aircraft as it prepared to take off — a move that triggered concerns over safety and airport protocol.
FAAN confirmed that both Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Olobawere were suspended for breaching flight safety procedures during the confrontation.
Who Is Captain Oluranti Ogoyi?
State of Origin: Osun State
Full Name: Oluranti Ogunwale Ogoyi
Nickname: Rantilicious (among friends and colleagues)
Captain Ogoyi is a seasoned Nigerian pilot with over a decade of flying experience and a reputation for excellence in the aviation industry. She is the daughter of Senator Felix Kola Ogunwale, a prominent Osun State politician who represented Osun Central in the National Assembly between 2003 and 2007.
Before joining ValueJet, she built her career flying with Arik Air, where she began as a First Officer. Her hard work and flight hours eventually earned her a promotion to Captain in September 2021, a moment officially celebrated by Arik Air’s top management, including CEO Captain Roy Ilegbodu, Director of Flight Operations Captain Adetokunbo Adekunbi, and then-Chief Pilot (now NCAA DG) Captain Chris Najomo.

Personal Life
Captain Oluranti is married to fellow aviation professional Captain Isaac Ogoyi Jr., another Arik Air alumnus. He later joined RwandAir and currently serves as a pilot with Uganda Airlines. The two share a bond not just in love but also in the cockpit, making them one of Nigeria’s most prominent pilot couples.
Why the Spotlight Now?
While the altercation involving K1 De Ultimate may have brought sudden media attention, Captain Ogoyi has long earned her stripes in aviation. Her presence in the industry symbolizes a growing number of Nigerian women breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
However, the incident has also raised questions about pilot conduct during emergencies and how celebrity behavior is managed in high-stress environments such as airports.
Though temporarily grounded, many believe Captain Ogoyi will bounce back, as she remains one of Nigeria’s most accomplished and admired female pilots.
