A University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) student, Ifeme Rebecca Yahoma, popularly known as Becky, has addressed the controversy surrounding her alleged denial of a boyfriend following a recent viral incident.
The issue began after YouTuber Asherkine visited the UNN campus and took Becky on a high-profile outing, which included shopping, gifting her a new phone, and other expensive treats. During the interaction, Becky was asked if she was in a relationship, to which she responded that she had never had a boyfriend.
Following this, a photo surfaced online showing Becky with a man named Ken, who claimed to have been her boyfriend for two years. The post went viral, triggering backlash against Becky, with many accusing her of disloyalty and chasing clout.
However, in a newly released video statement, Becky publicly debunked the claims. She stated that the narrative was entirely false and that the man in question was not her boyfriend. She expressed surprise over the social media harassment and distanced herself from the allegations, calling the entire situation a fabrication.
“I’m here to debunk the whole story going around about me denying my boyfriend. First of all, the name “Becky Chinaza” he is using is not my name. I don’t know who this person is,” she said.
“The WhatsApp message he’s been sharing across social media is not me — that isn’t even my DP on WhatsApp. Even the replies don’t sound like me. I don’t speak that kind of English.”
The UNN student went on to affirm her innocence and clarify that she has never been in a relationship.
“I am so much innocent of all these accusations. I will keep saying it — I do not have a boyfriend, and I have never, ever had a boyfriend.”
“If he is claiming to be my boyfriend, he should bring more evidence and stop going to my TikTok to screenshot the videos I have already made and photoshopping them.”
“Bring evidence that you and I are actually dating.”
Rebecca’s statement has drawn mixed reactions online, with many expressing support for her boldness in speaking up, while others continue to question the situation.
Meanwhile, the Department of Mass Communication at UNN had earlier issued its own statement backing the student and condemning the photo as fake and defamatory.
