Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted with heartbreak and disbelief to the tragic death of his Portuguese teammate, Diogo Jota, and Jota’s younger brother, Andre.
The devastating accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, on the A52 highway near Zamora, Spain. The 28-year-old Liverpool forward and his 26-year-old brother were travelling in a Lamborghini when their vehicle reportedly veered off the road while overtaking, following a tyre burst, and caught fire. Both died on the spot.
Reports say Jota had been advised not to fly back to the UK due to a recent lung surgery. Instead, he opted to travel by road to catch a ferry from Santander to Britain.
Reacting to the shocking news on social media, Cristiano Ronaldo stated that the incident “does not make sense,” especially considering how recently they had shared success on the pitch, winning the Nations League for Portugal. Ronaldo also recalled Jota’s joyful wedding just 10 days prior, describing the entire situation as “heartbreaking and surreal.”
He offered his sincere condolences to Jota’s family, including his wife Rute and their three children, and urged fans to pray for strength for those affected. The global football community has also been mourning the loss, with tributes pouring in from clubs, fans, and fellow players.
Cristiano Ronaldo wrote; “Doesn’t make any sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married. To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre We will all miss you..”
