The football world is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Portuguese winger Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away alongside his brother André Silva in a car accident on the A-52 highway in Zamora, Spain.

The devastating incident occurred after a tyre on Jota’s Lamborghini Urus blew out while overtaking, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and burst into flames.

In a moving tribute, Liverpool Football Club confirmed on Thursday evening that Jota’s iconic number 20 shirt will be “rightly immortalised” in honour of his contributions since joining the club in 2020. His final goal—scored in April’s Merseyside derby during the club’s 20th league title-winning campaign—has now become a symbolic farewell, forever etched in Anfield’s memory.

“His trademark shimmy and strike in front of the Kop… a poignant last goal of his life,” the club wrote in an official statement.

The 28-year-old star, known for his agility and sharp finishing, was reportedly on his way to catch a ferry to the UK for pre-season training. He had been advised not to fly due to recent lung surgery.

Calls from fans to retire the number 20 jersey grew rapidly after news of Jota’s passing broke. Liverpool FC has now answered those calls, confirming that Jota’s legacy will live on not only in memories but also in the annals of club history.

His brother, André Silva, 26, who played for Portuguese side Penafiel, also died at the scene. Their tragic deaths have sent shockwaves through the global football community, prompting an outpouring of grief and heartfelt tributes from fans, clubs, and players worldwide.

As the world pays homage to the life and career of Diogo Jota, Liverpool’s gesture ensures that his legacy will never be forgotten.

‘Wore number 20, won us number 20’
Liverpool FC issued a brief statement after the news of Jota’s death became public, saying they were “devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.”

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”

“We will continue to provide them with our full support,” the statement concluded.
