A Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom has gone viral after sharing his frustration over the high tax deductions taken from his salary.
In a video widely circulated on X (formerly Twitter), he explained that he moved to the UK seeking better opportunities and financial stability, only to face what he described as discouraging deductions. According to him, after earning £1,600 (about ₦3.5 million), the government removed £620 (about ₦1.3 million) in tax, leaving him with just £980 (about ₦2.1 million).
Visibly upset, he lamented that the deductions make it harder to save or achieve personal growth, despite working hard. He also mentioned that he knows migrants from Poland and the Czech Republic who have returned home because of similar challenges, adding that many Nigerians and other Africans would consider leaving as well if conditions back home were better.
The video has sparked conversations about the realities migrants face in high-tax countries, highlighting the balance between improved infrastructure and the financial pressure that comes with living abroad.
