Emotional scenes unfolded as Rute Cardoso, the wife of late Liverpool star Diogo Jota, was seen in tears while leaving a funeral home in Gondomar, Portugal. A video of the moment, shared by Spanish outlet Jaleos El Español, has gone viral, capturing the grief surrounding the tragic death of Jota and his brother André Silva.
The football community remains in shock after the two brothers were killed in a car crash last Thursday. They were traveling in a bright green Lamborghini when a burst tyre caused the vehicle to veer off the road and burst into flames, killing them instantly. Jota had reportedly been on his way to catch a ferry to England to resume pre-season training.
The wake was held at São Cosme Chapel in Gondomar, the town where Jota and Cardoso met as teenagers and married in June. Family and close friends attended the private ceremony, including their parents, grandfather, and football super-agent Jorge Mendes. FC Porto president André Villas-Boas was also present.
The mayor of Gondomar declared Friday, July 4, 2025, a day of municipal mourning in honour of the two brothers, both of whom were well-known and beloved residents of the town.
