South African media personality Kefilwe Mabote has sparked controversy after burning her expensive designer clothes, including Versace items, following her spiritual awakening. Mabote took to Instagram to address criticism and explain her decision, stating that it was driven by her newfound convictions as a born-again Christian.

According to Mabote, the Bible considers such items “accursed,” citing Joshua 7:13 as context. She specifically mentioned the image of Medusa on her Versace items, which represents a Greek god and is associated with the marine kingdom. As a believer, Mabote felt she could not serve two masters and chose to destroy the items rather than donate them.

Mabote’s actions have generated significant buzz online, with some praising her conviction and others questioning her decision. The incident highlights the complex relationship between faith, materialism, and personal conviction.

She wrote: “I’ve been getting questions about why I chose to burn Versace items instead of giving them away, and I want to take a moment to explain with care and understanding.

“The decision to burn the items came from a place of conviction. According to the Bible, such things are considered ‘accursed’ (see Joshua 7:13 for context). For example, the image of Medusa represents a Greek god, from the marine kingdom, and as believers, we cannot serve two masters. To give these items away would be to pass on something I no longer stand for, and I can’t in good conscience transfer things that I know carry deep spiritual implications.”
