Nigerian have expressed outrage, questioning the source of the funds and the politician’s intentions. Some have criticized the government’s handling of public funds, while others have made accusations of corruption.
This incident has brought attention to Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with corruption. In 2017, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission discovered $43.4 million in cash in an apartment in Lagos, suspected to be proceeds from unlawful activity. The commission has recovered over $180 billion in stolen public funds since implementing a whistleblower policy.
