Some alumni of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have voiced strong disapproval following the recent decision by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to rename the institution.
The governor announced that the school’s name would be changed from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan, in honour of the respected elder statesman.
The announcement was made during a public speech delivered by Governor Makinde at the institution in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State. The move, however, has not been well received by a section of the school’s alumni community.
Several former students took to social media to express their dissatisfaction, stating that the institution’s original name carries historical significance and brand value that should not be altered. The renaming has since sparked debates online, with many alumni urging the government to reconsider the decision.
One of them identified as iamcashbayo commented: “Ahhh rara o….. As an alumni WE SAY NO……”
Another one known as soji_soft said; “Which kind of name be this 😂😂.”
One @Adeshola54 reacted; “This is unnecessary abeg….I hope the alumni and students stand against this…The Polytechnic Ibadan is okay.”
Another Alumnus of the school known as @TrybZone on X uttered; “Nons£nse patapata Where U wan put the Article THE This man no Sabi anything oo.”
