Nigerian Policeman hits WAEC student with a stray bullet while chasing a vehicle in Ibadan

A heartbreaking and deeply troubling incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, has sparked public outrage and protest after a young WAEC student was tragically killed by a stray bullet fired by a police officer. The incident occurred along Gbagi Market Road, reportedly while the police were in pursuit of a vehicle.

According to eyewitness accounts and reports from Oyo Affairs, the officer allegedly fired shots at a fleeing vehicle, but a stray bullet struck the innocent student who was sitting inside his father’s car. The student, who was accompanied by his twin sibling, was reportedly en route to sit for the ongoing West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination when the incident took place.

Upon being hit, the boy was rushed immediately to Welfare Hospital, but tragically, he was declared dead on arrival (DOA). The news of the boy’s death has since sparked an emotional response from the community, especially given the circumstances: a student simply heading to take a critical exam alongside his twin brother.

In a spontaneous act of protest and grief, angry residents and sympathizers carried the student’s corpse to the Oyo State Government Secretariat, demanding the attention of Governor Seyi Makinde and calling for justice and accountability. Videos of the boy’s body and the surrounding protests have since gone viral on social media, amplifying national attention on the tragedy.

The incident highlights the growing concern over police conduct and the frequent occurrence of civilian casualties due to reckless firearm use by law enforcement personnel in Nigeria. The fact that such a young, innocent life — on his way to write an important exam — was lost due to an act of negligence has only deepened public sorrow and anger.

Authorities have not yet issued a formal statement about the incident, and it remains unclear what disciplinary or legal actions will be taken against the officer involved. However, pressure is mounting on the Oyo State Government and the Nigeria Police Force to launch a full investigation and ensure justice is served.
